Rossana Romero is a Colombian visual artist currently residing in New York. Her artistic practice revolves around deeply personal themes, encompassing elements of family, cultural history, migration, laws, environmental change and intimate aspects of her own life and relationships. Romero draws inspiration from renowned artists such as Wangechi Mutu, Beatriz Gonzales, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, whose works have significantly influenced her artistic vision. Through the mediums of oil paintings and paper mache sculptures, Rossana combines portraiture and landscapes to explore the rich narratives and folk tales of both South America and the United States combining Western European and Indigenous mythology. Her artistic process delves into the realms of surrealism and memory, weaving together elements of fantasy and reality. By intertwining her own narrative and identity within her artwork, Rossana invites viewers to embark on a journey that resonates with their own experiences and emotions. Rossana's evocative artwork not only reflects her personal exploration but also invites viewers to reflect upon their own lives and engage in a dialogue surrounding complex societal issues. Her contributions to the artistic landscape serve as a testament to the transformative power of art in challenging perspectives, sparking conversations, and fostering connections between diverse communities.
Rossana Romero weaves recurring symbols, landscapes, and the fluidity of bodies of water into both her paintings and sculptures. These symbols serve as a thread, connecting her diverse body of work and allowing viewers to anticipate and reference a cohesive narrative. At the heart of Rossana's artistic endeavors lies a passionate exploration of her personal culture and the intricacies of politics. Her creative process transcends mere artistic expression; it is a spiritual practice, an invitation for audiences to peer into her subterranean world and witness the offerings she presents to her guides and ancestors. Rossana's work takes viewers on a mesmerizing journey, employing symbols such as double-headed reptiles, twin felines, elusive shadows, graceful butterflies, and vibrant parrots, among others.Through her art, Rossana Romero extends an invitation, urging viewers to join her in confronting the erased history of the Americas. Her work serves as a conduit, bridging the divide between the past and the present, inviting contemplation and discourse. Ultimately, she believes that this collective exploration can illuminate the complex systems that shape our world and foster a deeper understanding of the world we inhabit. Rossana's art is a testament to the power of creativity, storytelling, and the relevance of history.
