Rossana Romero’s series and the painting 'No Des Papaya’ focuses on the divide in identity as someone who was born in Colombia but immigrated at a young age to the United States. ‘ No des papaya ‘ is a slang term that comes from Colombia which means to not put yourself in a position where you become vulnerable to be taken advantage of. The sacrifices that were made to come the US has placed families in a vulnerable place, where you are stuck between coming home to the culture of your family and your country, but living every day at the speed of the United States to stay alive, giving up the treasure of your home and not finding the safe space to call either place your own. These paintings were shown at Moontower Cider in Austin, Texas from February 2020- August 2020. The painting ‘La Ultima Cena’ was shown at the Masur Museum of Art in Louisiana from February 2020- June 2020.
‘La Ultima Cena’

Oil Painting
2019
‘La Ultima Cena,’ was painted specifically for the generation of kids in the United States who were born in a different country but were brought to the US for a better life in a fight to keep their relationship with their culture alive. 'La Ultima Cena’ is the table where we eat, where we gather, where love is present in our mouth and in our stomach, and where both countries collide and all generations of women in our family found unity with the stories of our culture through the food from South America and the taste of our past. It is the presence of God through bodies of women.

‘Fronteras’ is dedicated to all the kids being held in cages by the United States. When the news originally came out about kids being wrapped in foil paper as blankets, kids ripped away from their parents and getting lost in the system or sold in human trafficking, a photo of their rosaries that were taken from them at the border was posted on the news that stuck with me. No Des Papaya means to not put yourself in a position where you become vulnerable to be taken advantage of, but these kids didn’t have a choice, immigrants don’t have a choice.
‘Don Ali’

‘Don Ali’ is a painting of Rossana’s grandpa. He holds the presence of the past, he holds the wisdom we have earned as we grow with age and allow the dark secrets families hold onto. Stories that were never told because you were always too young to hear them, but still our bodies carry the traumas passed on to the next generation.

‘Sanar’ is a self portrait of Rossana in a cycle of healing using the tears from her pain to create an ocean of healing and rebirth as she waters herself with love. She rips out her heart as a sacrifice and hands it to the crab to keep it safe in the shell, she rips out her stomach to feed her subconscious, and under the moonlight she travels with her two headed crocodile who ride on her shoulders to remind her the weight of it all.
